Which Treadmill Should I Buy for Home Use?

Behrendt und Rausch Fotografie

With a proven track record of fitness equipment service and maintenance, we feel that our staff here at Chandler Sports are in a great position to pass on our expert knowledge to all our current and potential customers in terms of what product to buy.  We know what to look for in a quality piece of fitness equipment.  But more crucially we know what works and what will last!!!  We have partnered ourselves with select manufacturers who we know offer quality products, with something for everyone!

When considering the above conundrum ‘which treadmill should I buy for home use?’ there are a number of factors you need to consider.  I’ll list the main factors below and run through them quickly….

  1. Space:  No not the final frontier and all that, but the amount of space you have free in your house or facility.  There’s no point finding the most technologically advanced treadmill out there only to not be able to get it through your front door or up your stairs.  ALWAYS check the boxed and unboxed dimensions of your treadmill before purchasing.  Space saving treadmills are now readily available to buy for home use.  Folding treadmills such as the Horizon Omega 2 (£599.00), Horizon Adventure 3 Plus (£899.00) and Horizon EliteT4000 (£1,499.00) offer fantastic space saving options for your home!  If you’re unsure then phone us here at Chandler Sports!Omega 2 New
  2. Budget:  Obviously this is a key aspect in purchasing…well…..anything!  But especially so when the cheapest decent home use treadmill will set you back at least £599.00 (Horizon Omega 2) .  I’m sure many of us would like a cheeky Ferrari for the school run but we know that this is impossible unless there’s a big win on the lottery!  In light of this you need to manage your expectations to be in line with your budget.  This brings me (very smoothly) onto my next point….
  3. Features:  Every manufacturer throws around specifications such as 3hp motor, 2.4mm thick orthopaedic belt and iFit compatibility etc.  They even make up their own words from time to time just to confuse us!  So let’s go through the most common specifications of equipment and breakdown what you should be looking for in your treadmill before you set up your own home gym!

 The basics are as follows:

Maximum Speed – at least 16kph (10mph)

Maximum Elevation/Incline – at least 10% powered incline NOT manual

Maximum weight tolerance – at least 19st (120kg)

Length and coverage of warranty – 2 years or more

 Length/width of running area – 55” x 20” (140cm x 51cm) is large enough for most people

Type of running belt – orthopaedic running belts are better for those with back issues

Entertainment – mp3/iPod connectivity, speaker and cooling fans are among the features that are becoming more common

Recommendations

Best Value: The Horizon Omega 2 treadmill (£599.00).  This has a very sturdy build and meets the above specifications.  iPod/MP3 connectivity and pretty decent speakers are a massive bonus!  With a 3 year parts and labour warranty and the easiest assembly instructions I’ve ever seen, you really can’t wrong with this little stunner!  Other products you may be interested in are the Adventure 1 Plus treadmill, or the Tempo T905 treadmill.

Best Performance: The Horizon Paragon 6 treadmill (£1,199.00).  This is a true workhorse with a powerful motor, a massive incline of up to 15%, a thick running belt and a specialised cushioning system for smooth usage!  The functionality of the console means you can track your fitness goals with ease and with a large running area of 60” x 20” and a maximum user weight of 159kg (25st) it will be especially useful for those taller or larger built runners.

Best Entertainment: Horizon Adventure 5 Plus.  The console on this treadmill has everything you could need.  You can control your iPod volume to track selection from the console without needing to touch your iPod.  It even has a dock station so that you can charge your iPod at the same time!  It has a goal centre to help you monitor your fitness progress over the weeks and months.  Serious runners and novices alike will love this treadmill.

With a powerful cooling fan and a polar receiver for more accurate monitoring of your heart rate, you can be assured that you’ll have a comfortable and productive training session with the Adventure 5 Plus treadmill.

With a powerful motor, large running surface and a variable cushioning system it’s a great treadmill for the whole family!
