What is Functional Training?

Functional training, as a concept, first showed up in the physiotherapy practices, in which the doctors rehabilitated people with injuries by making them perform everyday movements, like pushing, pulling, squatting, rotating, etc. The idea behind making this a generalised exercise routine is that these are movements the body should be making. Some argue that using machines makes the body do unnatural movements, which not only can lead to injuries but also won’t do much for your day to day life. Athletes also aim to increase the proficiency of simple moves – like a golfer’s swing- by using this type of training.

Over the past decade, there has been a shift towards making training more functional. In the context of body building, functional training involves mainly weight bearing activities targeted at core muscles and lower back.

So, you’re not an athlete, or a big fitness buff, but you think functional training makes sense, and want to give it a try? You can, as functional training requires very little equipment. Here a few pieces you can get to start your training today.
